Nvidia currently controls approximately 80% of the high-end AI chip market, with its stock market value reaching $1.82 trillion. Tech giants including OpenAI, Microsoft, Alphabet, and Meta have been racing to secure Nvidia's chips to compete in the rapidly emerging generative AI sector. However, in an effort to reduce energy consumption and potentially decrease both the cost and time required for chip design, some of Nvidia's major customers have begun developing their own internal chips tailored to their specific needs.

In response to this potential threat to its dominance, Nvidia is moving to enter the lucrative custom chip market. The company had already laid groundwork for this expansion in 2022 when it announced that third-party customers could integrate some of Nvidia's proprietary networking technology with their own chips. Building on this foundation, Nvidia officials have now met with representatives from its biggest tech customers to discuss the possibility of manufacturing custom chips specifically designed for them.

Dina McKinney, a former executive at AMD and Marvell, heads Nvidia's custom unit. While the immediate focus is on data centers, her team's broader goal is to extend the company's technology offerings to customers in cloud computing, 5G wireless, video games, and the automotive sectors. According to estimates from research firm 650 Group, the data center custom chip market is projected to grow to as much as $10 billion this year and double that figure to $20 billion in 2025. For perspective, the broader custom chip market was worth roughly $30 billion in 2023, representing approximately 5% of annual global chip sales.

Broadcom and Marvell currently dominate the custom silicon design market for data centers, making Nvidia's entry a significant competitive threat to their business segments. Market reaction to the Reuters report of Nvidia's plans was swift: Nvidia shares rose 2.75% while Marvell shares dropped 2.78%, reflecting investor confidence in Nvidia's expansion strategy and concerns for its established rivals.
