Elon Musk has been sounding the alarm on what he sees as the next great bottleneck for artificial intelligence: not chips, not talent, but electricity. During a CNBC interview on May 20, 2025, Musk predicted that AI's appetite for power would outstrip available generation capacity by mid-to-late 2026, even after the current transformer shortage gets sorted out. He doubled down on this thesis at the World Economic Forum in January 2026, arguing that the US would soon be manufacturing more AI chips than it could actually power. The constraint, he said, isn't silicon. It's watts.

Rather than wait for utilities to catch up, his AI venture xAI has taken matters into its own hands. The company's Colossus data center cluster in Memphis, Tennessee, has begun sourcing electricity from on-site gas turbines relocated from a decommissioned power plant in Southaven, Mississippi. Reports indicate the project could eventually involve as many as 59 gas turbines. An initial deployment of 27 units is capable of generating roughly 495 megawatts—enough to power a small city.

xAI's next project, Colossus 2, is projected to operate at a gigawatt scale. For context, a single gigawatt can power around 750,000 homes.

For the longer term, Musk has pointed to solar energy as the answer. He's suggested that a solar field covering a 100-by-100-mile area, paired with adequate storage, could theoretically satisfy the entirety of US electricity demand.

The energy solution has drawn legal scrutiny. A lawsuit filed on April 14, 2026, alleges that xAI's turbines operated without the necessary air permits, resulting in pollutant emissions that violated environmental regulations. The legal action involves environmental groups and the NAACP, raising questions about environmental justice in the communities surrounding the Memphis facility.

For Bitcoin miners, the AI energy crunch presents both a threat and an opportunity. Companies like Core Scientific and Hut 8 have already begun repurposing mining facilities for AI workloads, capitalizing on existing power agreements and cooling infrastructure. If grid capacity truly becomes the scarce resource Musk predicts, existing power purchase agreements could become some of the most valuable assets in tech.
