Microsoft expands Azure AI infrastructure with AMD's Helios platform, set to launch at scale in H2 2026 as alternative to Nvidia GPUs.
Microsoft plans to increase its deployment of AMD AI chips across Azure, marking an expansion of the two companies' partnership. The initiative centers on AMD's Helios platform, scheduled to ship in the second half of 2026. Helios is engineered to run large-scale AI models and will provide Azure customers with an alternative to Nvidia's dominant GPU infrastructure. AMD CEO Lisa Su characterized the partnership as a major milestone, while Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella emphasized that customers require greater choice in AI infrastructure options.
Despite these inroads, Nvidia retains considerable pricing power in the market. However, the company now faces mounting competition from AMD as well as custom TPUs developed by other technology firms.
Anthropic, the company behind Claude, appears poised to become another major AMD customer. A public GitHub profile belonging to an AMD director suggests that Anthropic is currently testing AMD hardware. According to SemiAnalysis, AMD has assigned Anthropic its highest priority classification, elevating it to the same tier as major customers such as Meta. Anthropic remains in the testing phase with the technology.
AMD may formally announce the partnership at its upcoming "Advancing AI" conference, contingent on its engineering team resolving outstanding concerns regarding software quality. OpenAI has similarly established a partnership with AMD.
