Intel hired Qualcomm senior GPU engineer Eric Demers to lead discrete GPU development.

Intel has appointed Eric Demers, a senior engineer from Qualcomm, to lead the company's GPU development efforts as it looks to capitalize on growing artificial intelligence data center demands. Demers recently confirmed his move to Intel through a LinkedIn post, bringing with him nearly 14 years of experience leading Qualcomm's Adreno graphics development.

Intel CEO Lip-Bu Tan publicly announced the hire at a recent artificial intelligence conference, though he initially withheld the engineer's name. "I just hired the chief GPU architect, and he's very good. I'm very delighted he joined me," Tan said at the event, according to Reuters. He also noted that "a couple of customers are engaging heavily" with the company's chip manufacturing contracts.

Demers brings extensive expertise in GPU and graphics hardware architecture from his tenure at Qualcomm and prior experience at AMD. During his more than seven years at AMD, he assisted in the development of the popular R300 and R600 GPU designs, establishing himself as a key figure in graphics innovation across the semiconductor industry.

The appointment underscores Intel's broader strategic push to strengthen its position in the competitive AI infrastructure market. With government support helping to lift the company out of recent challenges, the hiring of a veteran GPU architect signals serious commitment to developing new hardware specifically tailored for data center AI applications.
