Extreme supply constraints on consumer-grade GPUs highlight acute shortage in channel inventory.

Nvidia's RTX 50-series lineup finally hit shelves this week, though in severely limited quantities. According to Newegg, all available RTX 50 inventory sold out in just 20 minutes, with most stock being wiped out in under five minutes. The reason behind these near-instantaneous sellouts is constrained supply, as Nvidia itself admitted, suggesting that "stock-outs may happen." Reviews of the RTX 5090 and RTX 5080 "left much to be desired from these GPUs," yet demand far exceeded supply.

The scale of the shortage is striking. Micro Center reportedly received just 233 RTX 5090s across the entire U.S., while Taiwan, with a population of 23.42 million, was allotted a mere 84 RTX 5090s—an absurdly low amount given the profile of Nvidia's launch. These figures underline the severely limited availability originating from Nvidia's end.

The core constraint stems from production bottlenecks at the foundry level. Both Blackwell's data center and gaming counterparts employ the same 4N wafers from TSMC. Each RTX 5090 or RTX 5080 produced consumes wafer supply that could have been allocated to B100 and B200 AI accelerators. The performance gains meanwhile are modest relative to the price increase—the RTX 5090 is around 25% faster than the RTX 4090 for a 25% higher MSRP.

Newegg has promised additional inventory as AIBs and Nvidia supply more units, and suggests following their social media accounts for real-time stock updates. An alternative path to securing an RTX 50-series GPU without resorting to scalpers is purchasing pre-built systems from Newegg's ABS (Advanced Battlestations) line, where some units equipped with Blackwell GPUs remain in stock—though this comes at the cost of paying for an entire system with markup, rather than the GPU alone. There is no word on when supply will improve.
