China completed a massive AI data center campus designed to operate one million GPUs simultaneously.
China has launched a vast artificial intelligence computing complex in Inner Mongolia that marks another major step in the country's race to expand AI infrastructure. The Envision Galaxy Campus in Ulanqab began operations on Thursday, developed by green technology company Envision Group and billed as the world's largest single AI data center by token output capacity.
Spanning approximately 120,000 square meters, the facility is designed to accommodate computing power equivalent to one million graphics processing units (GPUs) operating simultaneously. The campus is planned to reach a total capacity of 2 gigawatts, positioning it as China's largest AI computing industrial park.
The project stands out for its focus on renewable energy, with more than 80% of the campus's electricity supplied directly by renewable sources. This approach addresses one of the biggest challenges facing rapid AI expansion: the enormous electricity demand of data centers.
The facility is the flagship project of Envision's "Mission Gobi" initiative, which aims to develop 5 gigawatts of green AI computing capacity in desert and arid regions around the world by 2030. The strategy combines large-scale data centers with renewable energy generation and energy storage infrastructure.
The location in Inner Mongolia is particularly significant, as the region possesses substantial renewable energy resources and large areas of land suitable for major infrastructure projects. With AI development accelerating globally and access to computing power becoming increasingly important for governments and technology companies, China's project reflects its broader push to build large-scale AI infrastructure while reducing the environmental impact of powering data-intensive systems. The combination of massive GPU capacity, a 2-gigawatt power footprint, and predominantly renewable electricity makes it a notable example of how China is integrating AI computing with renewable energy ambitions.
