CoreWeave enters APAC data center market with Indonesia expansion, targeting regional AI infrastructure sovereignty.
As AI adoption accelerates across Southeast Asia, CoreWeave is expanding its AI cloud platform into Asia-Pacific, announcing plans for three facilities in Indonesia to establish its first regional footprint. The Greater Jakarta deployment totals 360 MW of contracted IT power and is expected to come online in 2028, serving AI labs, startups, enterprises, and government customers across the region.
The expansion reflects a strategic shift toward regional AI infrastructure and data sovereignty. Providers are building capacity to reduce latency and meet data residency requirements, moving compute closer to customers as enterprise AI adoption spreads beyond North America and Europe. "CoreWeave goes where we can bring AI pioneers the capacity, performance, and reliability they need to build and scale their ideas," said Chief Operating Officer Sachin Jain. "Indonesia is investing heavily in AI education and digital capacity, and it's paying off. The country is becoming one of Southeast Asia's fastest-growing destinations for global tech investment."
CoreWeave will lease the facilities from an unnamed colocation provider while owning and operating the compute environment. The company chose Indonesia over more established markets like Singapore or Japan, citing the country's growing AI ecosystem and investments in digital infrastructure. "CoreWeave picked Indonesia because the country has already built AI infrastructure momentum, heavy government and private investment in data centers, and AI education, making it a natural entry point into Southeast Asia," a company spokesperson said.
According to Dave McCarthy, research vice president for cloud and edge infrastructure at IDC, the move signals CoreWeave's ambitions to compete globally. "CoreWeave is signaling that it intends to compete globally against legacy hyperscalers, transitioning from a North American and European player into a global AI infrastructure platform," McCarthy said. "Securing this level of scale in APAC establishes first-mover advantage as regional enterprise AI adoption ramps up toward 2028."
Indonesia offers practical advantages over more mature regional markets. "Indonesia offers what traditional tier-1 hubs like Singapore or Tokyo currently struggle with: scalable power availability, ample land, and strong national tailwinds for digital infrastructure," McCarthy said. "While mature markets face severe power constraints and higher operating costs, Indonesia provides CoreWeave the physical runway required for a mega-scale buildout right at the demographic center of Southeast Asia's booming digital economy."
As of March 31, 2026, CoreWeave operated 49 data centers worldwide with more than 1 GW of active power and more than 3.5 GW of contracted power supporting AI workloads. Indonesia will be the first location for its data center footprint in Asia-Pacific. The company has grown rapidly from a specialized GPU cloud provider into one of the industry's largest AI infrastructure platforms, competing with hyperscale cloud providers for AI training and inference workloads.
The expansion reflects a broader industry transformation. Early AI investments centered on massive training clusters in the US and Europe. As inference workloads grow and governments adopt stricter data residency requirements, enterprises increasingly demand AI infrastructure located closer to users and data. "We are seeing the transition from centralized global AI clusters to localized, sovereign AI deployments," McCarthy said. "As AI workloads shift from raw foundation model training to real-time inference and domain-specific fine-tuning, latency constraints and strict data residency regulations mandate in-country compute. Deploying native AI cloud infrastructure directly within regional borders is becoming a hard requirement for enterprise and public-sector adoption across Asia."
CoreWeave said the deployment is driven by both existing customer demand and anticipated growth. Enterprises, AI-native companies, and governments require AI compute to be close to their data and users due to latency-sensitive workloads and data locality requirements. The company also plans to hire and train an operations team in Indonesia.
The announcement arrives as Asia-Pacific's data center development pipeline reaches record levels. Cushman & Wakefield research reveals that the region's pipeline hit a record 26.5 GW in the first half of 2026, driven by surging demand from hyperscalers, cloud providers, and AI platforms. With 7.1 GW added to the pipeline and 1.4 GW of operational capacity delivered, the region is witnessing unprecedented growth in digital infrastructure. Southeast Asia has emerged as a key growth engine, accounting for nearly 50% of under-construction capacity.
The deployment marks CoreWeave's first step into the region and reflects the next phase of AI infrastructure competition. Providers now compete not only on the scale of their GPU clusters but also on their ability to deliver regional cloud platforms that satisfy enterprise requirements for performance, regulatory compliance, and data sovereignty. While CoreWeave declined to discuss additional Asia-Pacific projects, the company said it will continue expanding as customer demand grows.
