Micron is emerging as a critical supplier of memory and storage components for AI systems.

When it comes to AI infrastructure, all eyes are on GPUs, as evidenced by Nvidia's $4 trillion market value. However, AI training and inference require far more than just processing power—they demand networking between GPUs, infrastructure for power and cooling, and critically, storage and memory to manage raw data and models. As mathematician Clive Humby indicated, "data is the new oil," and without it, there is no AI. The storage and memory subsystem, sometimes called the AI data layer or AI data pipeline, is therefore one of the most critical elements of any AI system. Micron is rapidly emerging as a key supplier for this crucial AI data layer.

The memory and storage hierarchy of modern servers has evolved over many decades, driven by the constant need to increase performance and density. This evolution spans innovations ranging from on-chip SRAM to closely coupled high-bandwidth memory (HBM) to system main memory to pooled memory resources to SSD storage. For AI workloads, memory and storage have become critical, non-commodity elements. Only three major vendors supply both major components—Micron, Samsung, and SK Hynix—with Micron being the sole US company among them.

Micron's success in the data center is closely tied to AI growth, particularly in high-performance HBM memory and SSD storage. The company initially focused on Hybrid Memory Cube (HMC) but pivoted to HBM around seven years ago. After initial challenges with HBM2 and HBM2E, Micron capitalized on Nvidia's Hopper GPU accelerators with the HBM3 and HBM3E generations to capture the number two spot in less than a year. Micron's HBM3E is designed into AMD's newest Instinct MI350 platform, and the company is reportedly shipping HBM4 to key customers for future AI platforms.

Leveraging its proprietary 1-beta process node for HBM3E and HBM4, combined with advanced interposer and die stacking, Micron's HBM products offer the industry's highest bandwidth at up to 30% better performance efficiency than products from Samsung and SK Hynix. Through close collaboration with AI accelerator customers including AMD and Nvidia, Micron has earned a spot as one of the leading memory suppliers for next-generation high-performance AI platforms.

Supporting both its customer demands and US onshore manufacturing initiatives, Micron has a $200 billion manufacturing expansion plan that includes expansion of facilities in Idaho, Virginia, and Japan, as well as a new complex of fabs in New York. Micron provides a complete AI data layer solution through high-performance HBM, DRAM, and SSDs, demonstrating the technology and resources to become a leader in this segment and proving valuable to both the electronics ecosystem and US government onshoring aspirations.
