Nvidia has delayed the Super refresh to its RTX 50-series GPUs indefinitely, shifting production priorities toward AI chips amid a global RAM shortage. The refresh was expected at CES 2026 in January but did not materialize. According to The Information, Nvidia managers decided in December not to release the new cards as scheduled, choosing instead to prioritize AI chips due to limited RAM supply. Compounding the gaming impact, "Nvidia is also slashing production of its current line of gaming chips," the RTX 50-series, which are already in high demand and consistently sold out at retailers.

The priority shift reflects Nvidia's financial reality. In its Q3 2026 earnings, Nvidia reported record-breaking revenue of $57 billion, with data center revenue accounting for $51.2 billion of that total. While gaming revenue was up 30 percent during the same period, it represents a much smaller slice of the company's business than it once did.

The delays carry significant timeline implications. With no new gaming GPU launch from Nvidia scheduled for 2026, the company's next-generation RTX 60-series cards are likely to be pushed back as well. The RTX 60-series was "originally scheduled to begin mass production at the end of 2027," but this delay could push that timeline into 2028 or even later.

While Nvidia could potentially move the timeline for its new gaming GPUs back up, the persistent RAM shortage presents a structural constraint. As The Information notes, the shortage continues to drive up prices and push back release dates for hardware ranging from iPhones to the Steam Machine, suggesting that planned hardware upgrades for PC gamers may face extended delays.
