AMD announces MI250 next-gen HPC GPUs and Milan-X Epyc CPUs launching in November, signaling competitive response to NVIDIA leadership.
AMD announced its Accelerated Data Center Premiere Virtual Event for November 8, 2021, barely two weeks away, where the company will introduce next-generation Instinct MI250 accelerators and EPYC Milan-X processors. The event will be held at 11 a.m. ET and will be accessible to the public at www.amd.com/en/events/data-center, with a replay available after the conclusion of the livestream event. Presentations will be delivered by AMD President and CEO Dr. Lisa Su, Senior Vice President and General Manager of the Data Center and Embedded Solutions Business Group Forrest Norrod, and Senior Vice President and General Manager of the Server Business Unit Dan McNamara.
AMD will debut its first multi-chip module design (MCM) GPU in the form of the Instinct MI250X and MI250 accelerators, which feature the codename Aldebaran GPU. The Instinct MI250X will feature an MCM GPU with 110 Compute Units (CUs) and 128GB of HBM2e memory.
The company will also introduce the next-generation EPYC Milan-X CPU, which will offer up to 64 cores and 128 threads on the Zen 3 architecture. The processor will feature a 280W TDP and 768MB of L3 cache.
AMD's own Sasa Marinkovic teased the upcoming announcements, stating "My Instinct tells me this is going to be EPYC" in a tweet, suggesting confidence in the significance of the event. Given the scale of the event and the executive-level endorsements, the anticipated product debuts appear well-positioned for announcement at the November 8 premiere.
